My Story & Approach
Hi there, I'm Janet Leese. A licensed clinical social worker.
I specialize in working with adults and elderly struggling with medical challenges, chronic illness (cancer, autoimmune disorders, etc.), cognitive challenges (Alzheimer's disease, dementia, etc.), caregiving (for children, spouses, elderly parents), and life changes that come with a diagnosis.
I’ve worked with people dying from illnesses and their grieving family and friends. I have experience supporting and educating parents on parenting and special needs. I also have experience helping clients with addiction/sobriety, mental illness (depression/anxiety), domestic violence, and abuse.
I value my clients becoming their true selves, being content with who they are and what they want. I value their happiness and the importance of finding it in the midst of very real challenges. I value authenticity, compassion, social justice, education of the systems that hinder us, a balance of individuality and community, growth, playfulness, exploration, love, meaning, wisdom. Celebrating the little things, the little victories when they happen.
I’ve known since I was in college that working with seniors and adults was my calling. I took a class on adult development and aging when I was 20 years old, and the information “clicked” in a way it never had before. Soon after I started working at an adult day care and it felt very natural to be there. For the first time, I truly loved what I was doing and what I was learning. I knew I was in my right place.
I am dedicated to learning, supporting and teaching those in my life about the systems that disadvantage many of us. I am willing and ready to discuss topics on racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, and ageism…to name a few. As these topics are more important than ever, I am listening and I am learning.
Starting Songbird Counseling has been a lifelong dream of mine, in fact, the name Songbird Counseling came from my childhood street I grew up on, Songbird Lane.
An ode to my life and an ode to my mother.
